Back in October, Union-Scioto High School student Zach Huston was attacked and beaten inside a classroom for being gay. The encounter was videotaped and quickly went viral. Now the attacker, 15-year-old Levi Sever, has been sentenced to 90 days in a juvenile detention facility. He plead guilty to a delinquency count of assault before Juvenile Court Judge Richard Ward. Sever will undergo mental health counseling during his detention.
An online petition asking the school to revise its anti-bullying policies drew the attention of the ACLU, who has threatened to sue the school unless they update their anti-bullying policies to include language protecting LGBT students. That lawsuit is currently pending as the school and ACLU hold talks.
